Engineers and contractors both have a need for a reliable, non-destructive means to locate rebar, post tension cables, conduits (metallic & non-metallic), voids, cables, within concrete structures (floors, walls, columns) prior to drilling, cutting or coring; or simply concrete slab thickness. In many cases this activity is performed during the design phase in order to optimize design and reduce the quantity of change orders during construction due to obstruction conflicts. In other cases it is left up to the contractor to perform as part of the construction activities. Inspectors sometimes use this technology verify the installation of conduit in some structures that where concrete was poured prior to rebar inspection.
Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) systems have the capability of providing 2-D or 3-D concrete imaging safely presenting data in real-time on a LCD display and storing it for future detailed analysis. The ability to perform such activities and the accuracy of the results is highly dependent on both 1) The sophistication of the equipment & 2) The expertise of the technician performing the scan. GPR systems have a huge range in terms of capabilities; low end models that provide moderate results in 2-D have very little capability and dept ability, in most cases just a few inches; these units can cost as little as $5,000. The higher end models which have 3-D capability, data storage capability and are more accurate can cost up to $25,000.
Concrete rebar scanning has surpassed the old x-ray technology for a variety of reasons including lower cost, real time information, no radiation to deal with and accessibility related. The following chart provides a summary of these.
